Koeln, Germany

This could be Rotterdam or anywhere, Liverpool or Rome

From Copenhagen, I rode the EuroNight Hans Christen Andersen train to Koeln (or Cologne as we know it), home to a great big train station as well as a relatively large and well known cathedral.

The relatively large and well known cathedral isn’t the only thing to see in Cologne (or Koeln as the railway schedules like to spell it), which is a good thing since the inside of the cathedral was partially closed because they were actually using the cathedral for some sort of religious ceremony (I know, that’s what it’s for but it almost seems weird to see them as more than a tourist attraction sometimes). That gave me time to wander a bit, see the Rhine, eat a pretzel the size of my head and enjoy occasionally wonderful passing views like this, where everyone (even me) loves seeing colorful houses with flowerboxes.

Famous for its sticky waffles and greasy fries served locally with mayonnaise (which is tasty when the fries are super hot but grows kind of disgusting after a bit), Bruges is a wonderfully scenic town of pretty canals and pretty bridges and pretty cobblestone streets lined with pretty houses with pretty flowerboxes.

Another picture of the same square and statue, but from a slightly higher view. This is from the belfry, which has bells and actually plays music sometimes, although I’ll be damned if I could figure out exactly when, it seemed to be going off at random times throughout my all too short visit.

There was a bit of a fog in Bruges, and especially the next morning when I needed to head back to Brussels to catch a plane, that fog made the pretty canals and pretty bridges and pretty cobblestone streets lined with pretty houses with pretty flowerboxes even more atmospheric.
