She's got a friend, an ugly monster that will eat your face
Summer 2013
This year’s Warm Up canopy is Party Wall by CODA. Every year, PS1 holds a competition and builds a temporary installation in its courtyard and this year's design is one of the good ones- a great big perforated wall that provides some shade (not all that much actually) but also has real presence. If you want to see Party Wall for yourself (along with a fairly strong contemporary art exhibit inside PS1 including bleachers to nowhere and a walk in freezer with glacial ice chunks), Warm Up runs every Saturday until right after Labor Day. They also changed around the ticket setup this year, and for once buying advance tickets will really save you time.
Summer 2012
Warm Up at PS1 is your annual chance to drink alcohol and listen to loud music in the blazing heat of a contemporary art museum courtyard in Long Island City. Warm Up features not only loud throbbing music with guest djs (Thom Yorke will actually be there this year) but also features the winning design from PS1's annual Young Architects Program, a competition to design the courtyard canopy for Warm Up. This year's winner is a firm named HWKN and is big blue spiky CO2 cleaning monster named Wendy. Far larger than past canopies, it has a real presence even though it leaves most of the courtyard unprotected from the heat, which this past Saturday was pretty damn intense.
Summer 2011
This past weekend was the opening weekend of Warm Up at PS1 and the premiere of this year's Young Architects Program winning canopy. This year's design is called Holding Pattern (by a firm calling itself Interboro Partners) and consists of thin fabric strips (which I guess offer some protection from the hot, hot sun) as well as a room of trees and haybale seats (which is practical and kind of nice) and a scattered courtyard of junk (which isn't quite as nice). And while it remains hard to beat the fun of last year's canopy and the craziness of the one from two years ago, the canopy is by no means the worst that has ever been installed and as (almost) always is worth seeing for yourself.
